My Experience as a working-class parent of a UC Berkeley Undergrad Student - Paying the Bill

At first glance when considering the reputation of UC Berkeley, yearly tuition at around 15k seems very reasonable - thanks in large part to the 'makers' of California. I should mention we are a solidly California working class family meaning yes, we have to go to work and yes we are victims of socialist (neo-communist) california.  We pay the way for the 'preferred takers' meanwhile we have no money left due to high taxes - for healthcare, education costs and on and on - and yes sometimes even food.

Our son though is a gifted academic so the sacrifice is worth it?? Maybe??  We hope...

To UC Berkely's credit the university did help us in the form of the Middle Class Scholarship (MCS), but to be clear we don't expect handouts  - we've never been on welfare - so it was a welcomed hand-up.

Having said that, unless you happen to live within communiting distance the costs of attending UC Berkeley add up quick: (keep in mind Berkeley is a communist city)

- Extremely high sales tax in Berkeley

- Housing is very expensive

- High rates of property crime (your stuff and especially your bike probably getting stolen).  And don't forget, in a communist city like berkeley full of bolsheviks the victim is treated as the perpretrator somehow someway.

- UC Berkeley literally charges a premium for anything and everything - parking, food, sporting events to name a few

When you add it all up working class families - you know the ones who maintain a functioning society but also despised by the elite/epstein class - will shell out roughly 50k per year to send their son/daughter to UC Berkeley.

My son will graduate Spring 2026.
